How to Make Money With ChatGPT: 8 Ways, Plans and Who Owns What It Writes

You can make money with ChatGPT by using it to deliver work people already pay for: writing, social posts, research briefs, client-specific GPTs or digital products. ChatGPT speeds up the work, but you still find the client and check the result. You can start on the free plan, and paid plans add higher limits.

Can you really make money with ChatGPT?

Yes, in the way people make money with any tool: by using it inside work that someone is willing to pay for. A small business owner who needs a week of social posts, a one-page summary of a topic or a set of answers to common customer questions will pay for the finished, checked result, not for access to a chatbot.

The most solid income number we found is not about ChatGPT. Bankrate's 2025 survey, run by YouGov among 2,616 US adults, found that 27% have a side hustle and that side hustlers earn $885 a month on average and $200 at the median. It covers side hustles of every kind, so read it as context.

One test works for any offer you meet along the way: does it show its costs and the work involved? The US Federal Trade Commission used that same logic in Operation AI Comply, which in September 2024 announced actions against schemes that promised AI-powered income. Everything below states costs and effort up front.

Do you need to pay for ChatGPT to make money with it?

No. You can start on the free plan, test your first service with it and move up only when a limit gets in the way of real client work. Here is what OpenAI lists for the individual plans in October 2026.

PlanPrice per monthWhat it adds
Free$0Unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails, with limited uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory
Go$8Everything in Free, with more messages, uploads, image creation and voice chats, and longer memory. The plan may include ads
Plus$20Everything in Go, with advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research and memory, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs
ProFrom $100 (tiers at $100, $200 and $500)Everything in Plus, with a choice of three usage tiers, maximum deep research and maximum memory

The dollar prices come from OpenAI's pricing documentation. The pricing page itself can show your local currency, so confirm the number on your own screen before you subscribe.

A practical rule: use the free plan for your first sample, then pay for Plus only if you hit a limit during a real client job, or if you need projects or custom GPTs. Business plans start at 2 users, so a solo seller does not need one.

Can you sell what ChatGPT writes?

Yes. OpenAI's Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026, say that, as between you and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by applicable law, you retain your rights in what you type in and you own the Output. OpenAI assigns you whatever rights it has in that Output.

Three points from the same terms shape how you work:

  • The Output may not be unique. Other users can receive similar output from the service, so your edits, structure and examples are what make a deliverable yours.
  • The Output can be wrong. The terms say it may not accurately reflect real people, places or facts, and that you should evaluate it, including with human review, before using or sharing it.
  • Do not present it as human-written when it was not. The terms list representing Output as human-generated, when it was not, among the things you cannot do.

In practice: draft with ChatGPT, check every fact, name and number yourself, edit until it sounds like the client, and tell the client how you work. A client who sees you check the result has a reason to trust you more.

How do you make money with ChatGPT?

There are three ways to get paid, and the eight methods below fall into them. Services: a client pays you for a result, such as a month of posts or a one-page brief, and the income continues while you deliver. Products: you create something once, such as a template pack or a checklist, and sell it more than once. Faster work: you use ChatGPT inside work you already do, such as writing or customer support, and finish more of it.

The split of work is the same in all three. ChatGPT produces first drafts, options, outlines and rewrites. You choose the client or the buyer, give ChatGPT the right context, check facts, edit the tone, deliver on time and handle the conversation afterward. The tool lowers the time it takes to make something. It does not find your first customer, so every method here has a first step that involves a real person.

What are the best ways to make money with ChatGPT?

These eight are in no particular order. Each one lists what you sell, what ChatGPT does, what stays yours, what it costs to start and the first step. If you want a broader view that is not tied to one tool, read our guide to how to make money with AI. If you want to build around a customer instead of a tool, see 12 AI business ideas with startup costs.

1. Writing and editing for small businesses

  • What you sell: website copy, product descriptions, newsletters, blog posts or edits of text a business already has.
  • What ChatGPT does: drafts, offers headline options, rewrites for a different tone and tightens sentences.
  • What stays yours: learning the business, getting the facts right, matching the brand's voice and meeting the deadline.
  • Cost to start: $0 on the free plan.
  • First step: pick one kind of business, such as dentists or fitness studios, write a sample page for a real one and send it with a short note.

Clients pay for writing they can publish without rewriting. Your review is the product, and it is also what separates your work from a raw draft the client could generate alone.

Ideal for you if you already enjoy writing or editing. Our guide to AI freelancing has a short test to pick your first service.

2. Social media posts for a local business

  • What you sell: a monthly set of posts, captions and a simple calendar for a business that has no time to post.
  • What ChatGPT does: turns a list of the business's offers, events and customer questions into post ideas and captions in the brand's voice.
  • What stays yours: knowing the real offers, taking or choosing the photos, approving each post with the owner and posting on schedule.
  • Cost to start: $0 on the free plan, plus whatever scheduling tool the business already uses.
  • First step: choose one local business, draft five posts based on what it sells and send them to the owner as a free sample.

Local owners tend to answer a finished sample faster than a pitch. If you also design the images, Simplified combines design and social scheduling in one tool.

Ideal for you if you like steady monthly work and short feedback loops.

3. Short-form video scripts

  • What you sell: scripts, hooks and caption text for creators and small brands that publish short videos.
  • What ChatGPT does: generates several openings for the same idea, structures a script around a point and rewrites it for different lengths.
  • What stays yours: knowing what the creator's audience responds to, trimming each script to the creator's own style and keeping claims accurate.
  • Cost to start: $0 on the free plan.
  • First step: pick a creator you follow, write three scripts from one of their long videos and send them.

This method sits close to the clipping path covered in our ebook, where AI tools cut and caption the video itself. Our Submagic guide covers a captioning tool built for that step.

Ideal for you if you like video and are comfortable making something before anyone asks for it.

4. Research summaries and briefs

  • What you sell: a one or two page brief that answers one question a business owner has, such as who the local competitors are or what customers say they want.
  • What ChatGPT does: organizes notes, summarizes long documents you upload and drafts a clear structure.
  • What stays yours: choosing reliable sources, checking every fact against them and deciding what matters for that owner.
  • Cost to start: $0 on the free plan, which has limited uploads. Plus adds more.
  • First step: pick one question for one business, build the brief from public sources and send it as a PDF.

The terms warn that the Output may not reflect real facts, so this method rewards the person who checks. A brief with sources the owner can open is worth more than one that only reads well.

Ideal for you if you like reading, sorting information and explaining it plainly.

5. Résumés, cover letters and LinkedIn rewrites

  • What you sell: a rewrite of a person's résumé, a cover letter or a LinkedIn profile.
  • What ChatGPT does: reorders sections, tightens bullet points and proposes wording for the target job.
  • What stays yours: interviewing the client about what they did, keeping every claim true and matching the document to the job.
  • Cost to start: $0 on the free plan.
  • First step: rewrite your own or a friend's résumé, keep the before and after, and show both to the next person who asks.

This is an entry-level service because the work is short and the buyer knows what a good result looks like. Every line you write has to be accurate, so ask the client to confirm dates, titles and numbers before you deliver.

Ideal for you if you want a service with small, quick projects and a clear before and after.

6. FAQ and customer-reply libraries for small shops

  • What you sell: a document with ready answers to the questions a shop gets every week, such as hours, returns, shipping and booking.
  • What ChatGPT does: turns the owner's policies and past messages into short, consistent replies and groups them by topic.
  • What stays yours: getting the policies right, writing the exceptions and keeping the library current.
  • Cost to start: $0 on the free plan.
  • First step: ask one shop owner for the last twenty questions customers sent, then turn them into a one-page library.

Owners value time they get back, and a reply library is easy to explain. It also leads to a larger project: once the answers exist, they can power a chat or voice assistant. Our HighLevel AI guide shows what that next step involves.

Ideal for you if you enjoy bringing order to messy information.

7. Custom GPTs built for a client's own use

  • What you sell: a custom GPT set up for one client, loaded with their instructions and reference documents, for a task such as drafting replies or answering internal questions.
  • What ChatGPT does: follows the instructions and documents you give it each time the client opens it.
  • What stays yours: interviewing the client, writing the instructions, testing the answers and teaching the client to use it.
  • Cost to start: the pricing page lists custom GPTs with the Plus plan, so budget $20 a month while you build and confirm which plan the client will need.
  • First step: build a custom GPT for a task of your own, such as answering a list of questions from a document, and test it with a friend.

Sell this as a service for one client, not as a product for strangers. It rewards people who like process, clear instructions and training others. For the larger version of the same idea, read our guide on whether an AI automation agency is worth it.

Ideal for you if you like building tools for people and explaining how to use them.

8. Digital products: templates, guides and checklists

  • What you sell: a template pack, a short guide or a checklist for a specific audience, sold more than once.
  • What ChatGPT does: drafts outlines, writes first versions of each section and suggests formats.
  • What stays yours: choosing a real problem, testing the product with a few buyers, designing it and finding where your audience looks for answers.
  • Cost to start: $0 on Payhip's Free Forever plan, which takes a 5% fee per sale. Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 on direct sales and 30% on sales through its marketplace, and Lemon Squeezy charges 5% plus 50 cents per transaction.
  • First step: list twenty people who have the problem, then outline a short guide for them before you build anything else.

The product is the only method here that can sell again without new work, but it also depends most on distribution. Compare the platforms in our Payhip guide and in Payhip vs Gumroad.

Ideal for you if you prefer to build once rather than deliver every month.

How much can you earn with ChatGPT?

No official number exists for any of these methods, and this guide does not give one. Income depends on your niche, your offer, how many people you contact and how consistently you deliver.

The most solid figures we have are from Bankrate's 2025 survey of US side hustlers, which covers all kinds of side work, not only ChatGPT. It found an average of $885 a month and a median of $200. It also found that 58% earn more than $100 a month, 25% earn more than $500 and 14% earn more than $1,000.

The gap between the average and the median shows the usual pattern: most people start small, and a minority earns well above the rest. The numbers that matter for you are your own: messages sent, replies received and sales made in your first weeks. Track them from day one and let them decide whether to continue, change the offer or try a different method.

What are the limits of ChatGPT?

Knowing what ChatGPT does not do helps you price and plan your work. It does not find clients. It does not know whether a fact is true: OpenAI's terms say the Output may not accurately reflect real people, places or facts, so every number and name needs your check. It does not give you exclusive text, because similar output can go to other users. And it does not replace the part of the job that depends on trust, such as listening to the client and delivering on time.

The free plan also has limits on uploads, images, voice chats, deep research and memory. They are enough to build a first sample, and you can move to a paid plan when a real job requires more.

These limits are why the work is worth paying for. The value you sell is the combination of the tool, your judgment and a delivered result. It is also why a person who wants a business, not only a task, benefits from choosing one complete path and following it, which the next section covers.

Where does ChatGPT fit in the 5 AI side hustle paths?

Our free ebook, 5 Side Hustles With AI, compares five paths that people start with AI. ChatGPT is one useful tool inside each of them:

  • AI UGC videos: ChatGPT drafts scripts and variations for short ads.
  • AI websites: it writes page copy, FAQs and meta descriptions for a site you build for a local business.
  • AI short-form clipping: it writes hooks, titles and captions for clips cut from long videos.
  • AI voice agents: it helps draft the call script and the answers an agent should give.
  • AI digital products: it drafts outlines, sections and checklists you turn into a product.

The ebook compares these five on the same criteria, with starting costs, time and a first action for each. For the wider picture, start with how to make money with AI. To fit work around a job, see 10 AI side hustles you can start part-time.

How do you start this week?

  1. Pick one method. Use the comparison table to narrow eight to two, then choose one. Closing the other options is part of the decision.
  2. Stay on the free plan. Make your first sample before you pay for anything. Upgrade only when a real job needs more.
  3. Build one sample. A page of copy, five posts, a brief or a reply library, finished enough to show.
  4. Contact one person a day. A local business, a creator or someone who has the problem you solve. Send the sample, not a request for a meeting.
  5. Write down what happens. Messages sent, replies and sales. After two weeks, keep what works and change one thing.

The five day plan with a message to send on each day is in the free ebook.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make money with Chat GPT?

Yes. You make money by using it inside work someone pays for, such as writing, social posts, research briefs, reply libraries or digital products. ChatGPT speeds up the draft, and you supply the client, the fact check and the delivery. There is no promise of a fixed amount, so start with one sample and track your results.

Is the free version of ChatGPT enough to start making money?

For a first sample, yes. The free plan includes unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails, with limited uploads, images, voice chats, deep research and memory. That covers drafting copy, posts or a brief. Move to Plus when a real job needs more capacity, or projects and custom GPTs.

Which AI is best to make money?

It depends on the task. ChatGPT works well for drafting and rewriting text, while other tools are built for video, websites or phone agents. Choose the tool that fits the work you will sell, not a ranking. Our guide to making money with AI shows which tools match each path.

Can I earn money by chatting online?

ChatGPT does not pay you for chatting with it. Money comes from delivering work to someone who values it: a written page, a set of posts, a brief or a product. Use the chat as the way you make that work faster, and the client as the way you get paid.

Can I sell content written by ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI's Terms of Use say that, to the extent permitted by law, you own the Output. The terms also say output may not be unique, may contain errors and must not be presented as human-generated when it was not. Review and edit what you sell, and tell your client how you work.

What are the limitations of ChatGPT?

ChatGPT can produce text that does not accurately reflect real people, places or facts, so you verify it. It may give similar output to other users, and it cannot find clients for you. The free plan also limits uploads, images, voice and deep research. These limits are why checked, edited work is worth paying for.

How does ChatGPT work?

OpenAI's Terms of Use describe it as artificial intelligence and machine learning that is probabilistic in nature. In plain terms, it generates likely text from what you type, which is why results can vary and why OpenAI tells users to evaluate the Output, including with human review, before using or sharing it.

How does ChatGPT make money?

OpenAI offers a free plan and paid plans: Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Its pricing page says Go may include ads. Paid individual plans are billed monthly, Business has monthly and annual billing, and Enterprise is priced through sales. OpenAI also sells API access billed by usage.

Do I need to disclose that I used ChatGPT for client work?

OpenAI's terms say you cannot represent Output as human-generated when it was not. Beyond that, we recommend telling your client that you use an AI tool to draft and that you review and edit every deliverable. Clear communication prevents surprises and shows how careful your process is.
