How to Make Money With AI: 10 Ways Compared by Cost, Time and Effort

You can make money with AI by selling something AI helps you deliver faster: short videos, websites, clips, phone agents or digital products. None of them pays without prospecting and steady work. Compare the options on startup cost, time to a first sale and effort, then pick one and test it for a few weeks.

This guide puts ten ways side by side so you can choose one instead of saving more ideas. Each comes with what it costs to start, how you get paid and a first step you can finish this week. Prices come from each company's own pricing page, read in October 2026.

How do you make money with AI?

AI does not pay you. Clients and customers do. What AI changes is how fast and how cheaply one person can produce something a buyer is willing to pay for: a finished video, a website, a phone agent that answers calls, a guide or a design.

The ten ways below fall into three kinds of income. Services: a client pays you for a result, such as clips or a website, and the income continues while you deliver. Products: you create something once, such as a guide or a template pack, and sell it more than once. Faster work: you do familiar work, such as writing or design, in less time and take on more of it.

AI lowered the technical barrier to entry. It did not remove the need to find buyers and keep showing up, which is why every way here asks for outreach or distribution, not only a tool.

How do you choose the right way to make money with AI?

The mistake that costs the most is not picking the wrong way. It is comparing forever. People save twenty ideas and start none. A simple test ends that: judge every option on the same few questions, such as how crowded it is, how long it will keep paying and how much skill it takes.

We turned those questions into a scoring method called CLEAR. The full method, the scores for five of the ways below and a five day plan to start are in our free ebook, 5 Side Hustles With AI. For this guide, use the table to narrow ten options to two, then read those two sections.

What are the best ways to make money with AI?

These ten are in no particular order. The first five are the paths inside our free ebook, the other five are common routes beyond those. If you would rather build a business around a specific customer, see our guide to 12 AI business ideas with startup costs. If you want something to run next to a job, see 10 AI side hustles you can start part-time.

1. AI digital products

You create something once, such as a guide, a template pack, a prompt library or a small tool, and sell it repeatedly. AI shortens the slow parts: outlining, drafting, designing the cover and building the sales page. The work that stays yours is finding a real problem people have and a place where they already look for answers.

  • Cost to start: $0 on Payhip's Free Forever plan, which takes 5% per sale. Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 on direct sales and 30% on sales through its marketplace, and Lemon Squeezy charges 5% plus 50 cents per transaction.
  • How you get paid: per sale, with no limit on how many times one product sells.
  • First step: write down 20 people who have the problem, then outline a short guide for them before you build anything else.

Ideal for you if you prefer building once to delivering every month. Compare platforms in our Payhip guide and Payhip vs Gumroad, or sell inside a paid community with Skool.

2. AI voice agents

A voice agent answers a business's phone, books appointments and replies to common questions. A business that cannot pick up every call has a clear reason to pay for something that does, and AI lets one person build a working agent without a development team.

  • Cost to start: Vapi lists $0.05 a minute for hosting on top of the speech, language model and phone providers it passes through, gives new accounts $5 in free credits, and its calculator shows $82 to $129 a month for 1,000 minutes. HighLevel bills voice AI per minute as well, which we break down in our HighLevel AI guide.
  • How you get paid: many builders charge a one-time setup and a monthly fee, and you set your own terms.
  • First step: build an agent that answers your own number, then let a local business call it.

Ideal for you if you are comfortable learning a tool in depth and talking to business owners.

3. AI websites

Some local businesses have no website at all. AI website builders let you produce a working first version in hours, which changes the order of the sale: you can show the finished site before you ask for anything.

  • Cost to start: Lovable's free plan gives 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, enough for a first demo. Its paid plans add capacity; check Lovable's pricing page for current prices.
  • How you get paid: a one-time project fee, with an optional monthly fee for maintenance.
  • First step: pick a niche and a city, list businesses on Google Maps that have no website, build one for a business you have not contacted and send them the link.

Ideal for you if you want fast results you can see and show. For booking forms and follow-up that go with the site, see our HighLevel guide.

4. AI short-form clipping

Creators and podcasters publish long videos and need short clips for social platforms. AI tools find the strongest moments, add captions and format the result for vertical video, and your job is quality control and delivery. Clients who publish steadily need clips steadily.

  • Cost to start: Opus Clip has a Free plan, Starter at $15 a month and Pro at $29 a month. Its Free plan has limits, including a 3 day media window and a watermark on animated caption templates. Submagic's Starter plan is $19 a month, or $12 billed yearly, as covered in our Submagic guide.
  • How you get paid: usually a monthly arrangement with each creator.
  • First step: find a mid-size creator who publishes long videos and few clips, make three clips from their content and send them.

Ideal for you if you like a repeatable weekly process and clear deliverables.

5. AI UGC videos

UGC-style videos look like a person talking to the camera about a product, and brands run them as ads. AI video tools let you produce several versions of a script without being on camera, which matters because brands rotate creative often and keep needing new versions.

  • Cost to start: AI video tools usually bill by subscription plus credits, and many have free or low-cost entry plans. Simplified's Pro plan is $29 a month, or $19 billed yearly, and includes AI video alongside design and social scheduling; see our Simplified guide.
  • How you get paid: per video, or as a package for a brand.
  • First step: produce three sample videos for a brand you like, without being asked. That becomes your portfolio.

Ideal for you if you enjoy creative work and are happy to send samples before you have clients.

6. AI freelance services

Writing, editing, translation, captions, research summaries or design delivered faster with AI. Clients pay for a finished, checked result, not for access to a chatbot, so your judgment and reliability are the product.

  • Cost to start: no required spend beyond the tools you already use. Marketplaces take a service fee, so read their current terms before you pick one.
  • How you get paid: per project or by the hour.
  • First step: choose one service and one niche, make a sample and send it to ten prospects.

Ideal for you if you already have a skill and want to apply it faster. Our guide to AI freelancing includes a short test to pick your first service.

7. AI automation agency

You build automations that connect a small business's tools, such as lead capture, follow-up and booking, and charge a setup fee and a monthly fee. It asks more of you than freelancing, in selling and in managing clients, and it can pay more per client when it works.

  • Cost to start: HighLevel's plans start at $97 a month plus usage, as laid out in our HighLevel guide.
  • How you get paid: a setup fee plus a monthly fee per client.
  • First step: map one repeatable process for one type of business and build a working demo of it.

Ideal for you if you want to build a small business, not only a side income. Start with our guides on whether an AI automation agency is worth it, what it costs to start and how to get the first client.

8. AI design and print on demand

You create designs with AI and sell them on products such as shirts, mugs and posters without holding stock. A print-on-demand partner makes and ships each order, so you never pay for unsold inventory.

  • Cost to start: Printful has no monthly fee. You pay for the product, printing and shipping on each order, set your own retail price and keep the difference. For design work, Simplified has a free plan and a Pro plan at $29 a month.
  • How you get paid: profit on each sale.
  • First step: pick one narrow theme or audience, make a small collection and list it in a store you connect to Printful.

Ideal for you if you like design and want a low-risk way to test a product idea.

9. AI-assisted newsletters and niche reports

You publish a regular newsletter or a paid report on a narrow topic. AI helps with research, outlines and first drafts, and you add the judgment and the point of view that readers come for.

  • Cost to start: beehiiv's Free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers. beehiiv says it takes 0% of paid subscription and digital product revenue, and you keep what you earn minus Stripe's standard processing fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction.
  • How you get paid: paid subscriptions or paid reports.
  • First step: choose a topic you can follow every week and write three issues before you launch.

Ideal for you if you enjoy writing and are patient with an audience that builds over time.

10. AI training for small teams

Many small teams want to use AI at work and do not know where to start. You teach them: a live workshop, a short course or a community you run, focused on one job in one kind of business.

  • Cost to start: no required spend. To host a community or course, Skool's Hobby plan is $9 a month, as covered in our Skool guide.
  • How you get paid: per workshop, or through a membership.
  • First step: pick one task in one profession, teach it to three people for free and improve it from their questions.

Ideal for you if you like explaining things and already know a workplace well.

How much can you realistically earn with AI?

No source can promise what you will make, and this guide does not. The most solid number we found is not about AI. Bankrate's 2025 survey, run by YouGov among 2,616 US adults, found that 27% have a side hustle and that side hustlers earn $885 a month on average but $200 at the median.

The same survey found that 58% of side hustlers earn more than $100 a month, 25% earn more than $500 and 14% earn more than $1,000. The gap between the average and the median shows the pattern: a minority earns well above the rest, and most people start small. Use your own numbers as the real data: contacts made, replies and sales over your first weeks.

How do you start this week?

  1. Pick one way. Use the table above to narrow ten to two, then choose. Closing the other options is part of the decision.
  2. Subscribe to the cheapest plan that lets you produce. If you do not use the tool this week, cancel it.
  3. Build one sample. A clip, a website, a video, a short guide or a demo agent, finished enough to show.
  4. List 20 targets. Businesses, creators or people who have the problem you solve.
  5. Send the sample to all 20. Show the finished thing instead of asking for a meeting, and write down contacts, replies and sales.

The five day plan, with what to do each day and how to word your first message, is in the free ebook.

Is making money with AI legit?

Yes. The ways in this guide run on established platforms with public pricing and real buyers: creators who need clips, businesses that need a site or a phone agent, and people who pay for a guide that solves a problem. The tools are real, the prices are published and the demand exists.

What is not legit is any promise of guaranteed income. A useful test for any opportunity, including ours, is whether it shows its costs and the work involved. Everything here asks for effort over weeks and months, and nothing in this guide is a guarantee of results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to make money with AI?

The easiest is the one with the shortest distance between you and a first paying customer. Freelance services and short-form clipping need only an AI tool and one sample piece, while digital products and voice agents need more building first. Pick the way whose first step you can finish this week.

Can you make money with AI with no experience?

Yes. None of the ten ways requires a degree or a track record, because AI handles much of the technical work. You still need to learn one tool, make a sample and contact people. Experience speeds that up, but a finished demo can stand in for a résumé.

How much does it cost to start making money with AI?

Many ways start at $0 on free plans: Payhip Free Forever, the Lovable free plan with 5 build credits a day, Opus Clip Free and beehiiv Free up to 2,500 subscribers. Paid tiers begin around $15 a month (Opus Clip Starter) and $29 a month (Opus Clip Pro and Simplified Pro). Voice agents add per-minute usage, which Vapi lists from $0.05 a minute.

How long does it take to make your first dollar with AI?

It depends on the way and on how much outreach you do, and no reliable public source gives a timeline. Services you can demonstrate, such as clips or a website, can reach a first client sooner than products that need an audience. Set a test period of a few weeks and track contacts, replies and sales.

Do you need to code to make money with AI?

No. None of the ten ways requires you to write code to begin. Voice agents and automations reward a little technical learning later, but you can start with the tools exactly as they come.

Which AI side hustle pays the most?

No honest ranking by dollars exists, because results depend on your niche, your offer and your effort. For context, Bankrate's 2025 survey found side hustlers in the US earn $885 a month on average and $200 at the median, across all kinds of side hustles. Our free ebook compares five of these ways on long-run quality, not on a single payout.

Can you make passive income with AI?

Digital products come closest, because you build once and can sell the same product many times. Even then, finding the audience and the sales channel is the work. Services stop paying when you stop delivering, and nothing here is a guarantee.

Is making money with AI legit?

Yes. The ways in this guide use established platforms with public pricing and real buyers. What is not legit is any promise of guaranteed income, so judge every opportunity by whether it shows its costs and the work involved.
